To get started all you’ll need is the URL of a competitor you want to look at. If you don’t have one in mind simply do a search of the keyword you’re trying to rank for and click on one of the top 5 sites that show up and copy their URL.
To find a competitor’s backlinks, you will be using a tool that we used earlier to research how many backlinks our competition has when we were doing niche research. Open Site Explorer is a great site for finding links that the competition is using to rank highly. Just go to the site and type in the URL of a competing site to see a list of all the pages that link to that site. It also lists all of these links in the order of “Domain Authority”, so the best links are at the top.
Compiling and Saving the Info
- On the top right of the competitive info, there is a link that says “Download CSV”.
- Click this and open it in Excel and save this info for later.
- Do this for 5-10 different competitors and you’ll have hundreds or even thousands of links that you will be able to obtain.
