Send RSS to Twitter via Twitter API

Question: How to send RSS feeds to Twitter API with PHP Script and then run the php script via cron every 15 minutes. I found the scripts here (lastrss info here)but the tutorial was not for newbies and was also for running the script via web browser. This tutorial give you all the information you need to send RSS to twitter via API with a php script ran from cron.

1) mkdir for script to run

mkdir feed1

2) create two files, parse.php – this grabs the RSS feed – and then tw.php which send the RSS feed to twitter via API

vi parse.php

use “i” to insert the following code

use esc + wq! – to close and save the php script
now create tw.php

REMOVE THE

from the begining and ending of this code.

#!/usr/local/bin/php
<?php

of http://paulstamatiou.com
based on code from

*/
include('parse.php');
$uname = 'yourtwitterusername';//example "blah" for twitter.com/blah, or your email address
$pwd = 'yourtwitterpassword';

$twitter_url = 'http://twitter.com/statuses/update.xml';
$feed = "http://yourdomain.com/feed"; //the feed you want to micro-syndicate
$rss = new lastRSS;
if ($rs = $rss->get($feed)){
    $title = $rs[items][0][title];
	$url = $rs[items][0][link];

curl_setopt($curl_handle,CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT,2);
curl_setopt($curl_handle,CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER,1);

$buffer = curl_exec($curl_handle);
curl_close($curl_handle);
if (empty($buffer)){echo '<br/>message';}else{echo '<br/>success';}?>

[/php]

3) give files executable permission

chmod 775 parse.php
chmod 775 tw.php

4)test the php script to ensure it post rss feed to twitter

./tw.php

You’ll see some warning errors that are of no concern. If anyone can clean those up please post info in comments or email me and I’ll update the source and this article.

Check twitter for the most recent feed tweet

5) now lets tell cron to run the script every 15 minutes to check for a new feed and post it to twitter.

crontab -e

use “i” to insert

*/15 * * * * /path/to/script/tw.ph

This tells cron to run the script every 15 minutes.
