Don't let the Cisco Aironet cause you hair loss.

Upgrading the Cisco Aironet 1200 Series can be clunky and time consuming especially if you haven’t done it before. Follow these steps in order to upgrade the Cisco Aironet wireless AP to Cisco IOS and then get the most recent IOS on it too!

  1. Download Aironet VxWorks to Cisco IOS Conversion Tool and Image from the Cisco website, you’ll need a CCO login.
  2. Download the most recent IOS software.

Now take the Cisco IOS Conversion Tool and Image and upgrade. Allow the unit 30 minutes to upgrade. You’ll know if the upgrade is taking place because you’ll see the light on the top of the unit turn red.

Once it the conversion us completed you’ll need to lo-gin to the unit. I think the username and password are cisco / cisco. Then find the tftp upgrade option to upgrade to the most recent IOS image. Http will not work!

The Cisco Aironet 1200, 1220 are both very insecure by default so be sure to disable all the unneeded protocols, change the default password and set up WPA encryption.
