What is a proxy site?

February 12, 2008 by Kurt Turner

A proxy site is a site used to get web information for you and display the content from within that proxy site. Here is a example of a site proxy – http://www.google.com/translate_t?hl=en

Notice the option to translate a website. Place a website url in there like facebook.com and this is what you get

http://www.google.com/translate/facebook

All you request are being made via google.com – so if anyone is monitoring you web traffic you are hidden in the site proxy.

You can also configure a proxy in the web browser. Here I’ll explain how to configure a proxy in IE and firefox.

How to configure a proxy in Firefox

Click –> tools –> options –> advanced –> network –> settings –> add the proxy IP and if reuired port number. You can find may site and ip based proxies on the Internet by searching “proxy site” or”proxy ip address” however be careful who you choose because they can sniff all your traffic and snatch your passwords and such. I recommend staying with the google site proxy above or use a paid proxy service like https://kaxy.com

How to configure a proxy in Internet explorer

Click –> tools –> Internet Options –> Connections –> Lan Settings

Now click proxy setting “Use Proxy server for your LAN”

Hope this helps you configure a proxy server or explains what is a proxy site
